A carry-on suitcase of 40 x 55 x 20 cm is a popular luggage option. Most airlines, including low-cost carriers, allow such luggage in the cabin. Carry-on weight requirements have become stricter, and brands are actively working on lighter models. However, lightness is not the only selection criterion.
Important criteria when choosing a suitcase
The first thing to consider is the ratio of weight to strength. Many ultralight models lose in reliability. A difference of 150–200 g may seem insignificant, but insufficiently strong materials will affect durability.
It's better to choose proven brands such as Samsonite, American Tourister, Roncato, March, and Snowball, which guarantee quality and reliability. For example, the PP MATRIX series from Roncato combines lightness and strength, as do Samsonite's Curv suitcases, although this is a premium segment that doesn't fit every budget.
Materials: what to choose?
Most often the best choice will be suitcases made of polypropylene, polycarbonate, or fabric: polyester and nylon. Polycarbonate and polypropylene suitcases can withstand huge loads, but they will always be slightly heavier than fabric ones. Ultralight suitcases made of ripstop polyester deserve special attention: they look thin, but when properly made they withstand significant loads. The material is reinforced with super-strong polyester threads that make it resistant to damage and tears.
Design features
Another way to reduce the weight of a suitcase is to use innovative design solutions:
Telescopic handles. Most often they are made of aircraft-grade duralumin — a material almost three times lighter than steel, yet not inferior to it in strength.
Wheels. Perforated models reduce the overall weight of the suitcase while keeping reliability and maneuverability.
Frame. Lightweight models use either a lightened or honeycomb frame, which also reduces weight, or no frame at all.
All these elements make it possible to create suitcases weighing less than 2 kg in standard sizes.
Two or four wheels?
For large suitcases a four-wheel system is more convenient, but for carry-on luggage there is practically no difference. Two-wheeled suitcases have an important advantage — larger interior capacity. The difference can reach 1.5–2 liters with the same dimensions.
